Swedish-Swiss multinational corporation ABB, a leader in power and automation technologies, has won a deal to automate a 600-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Vietnam, according to powerengineeringint.com.
The project is an expansion of the Vinh Tan 4 plant in the southern province of Binh Thuan. Once in place in late 2019, it is set to provide an extra 3.6 billion kWh to the national grid.
ABB’s Symphony Plus automation system will control the plant’s boiler, turbine generator and auxiliaries.
Starting in April 2016, the expansion of the Vinh Tan 4 plant will cost some $1.1 billion. It is invested by Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), with a consortium of contractors including Doosan Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi and two Vietnamese companies.
Vietnam is developing a number of thermal power plants in the southern region, which embraces Ho Chi Minh City, the main driver of the national economy.
Against the backdrop of a coal exporter a few years ago, Vietnam has increased coal import to feed its coal-fired power plants.
The Southeast Asian country spent $605.78 million on importing 9.72 million tons of coal in the first eight months of this year, soaring 107.7% in value and 191.5% in volume year-on-year, according to customs data.
