The rate of delayed flights fell 3.6 per cent year-on-year in the first half of this year, with 14,000 in total, or 12.2 per cent of all flights.
According to a report from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) under the Ministry of Transport (MoT), carriers conducted 136,400 flights, up 6.2 per cent year-on-year.
The most common reason for delays was late-arriving aircraft, which accounted for 70.2 per cent of total delays, while delays caused by carriers were the second most common, at 19.2 per cent. Problems with airport facilities and services accounted for 5.9 per cent, flight management 1.5 per cent, weather 1.5 per cent, and other reasons 1.7 per cent.
The first half also saw 585 cancelled flights, or 0.4 per cent of all flights, down 0.2 per cent year-on-year.
In June, carriers conducted more than 24,600 flights, with 3,371 being delayed, or 15 per cent; higher than in May but lower than in June last year.
The number of flights at Noi Bai International Airport in June was over 6,700, conducted by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific, and Vasco, with 1,128 delayed.
The number of delayed flights of Vietnam Airlines was 389, accounting for 12.29 per cent of the total, Vietjet Air 618 flights, or 23.25 per cent, Jetstar 105 flights, or 16.6 per cent, and Vasco 6.18 per cent. Cancelled flights totaled 32.
In order to reduce the ratio of delays and cancellations, CAAV has instructed airports to prepare sufficient staff and equipment during peak hours and asked airlines to reserve 10 per cent of their fleet as backup aircraft to deal with any unexpected circumstances.
