Ground broken at new Hai Phong port

International container port slated for completion in 2018.

Construction of the Hai Phong International Container Terminal (Component B) began on May 12 in Cat Hai district, northern Hai Phong city.

Once completed in 2018 the $321 million port, with two 750 meter-long wharves, will be the first deep-water port in the north capable of receiving vessels of up to 100,000 DWT.

Speaking at the breaking ground ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc praised the efforts of investors in launching the project on schedule. He also thanked the Japanese Government for providing support to the country’s Molnykit Company throughout the process.

The project is being conducted by the Saigon Newport Corporation, the Molnykit Company, and the Hai Phong International Container Port Company in a public-private partnership.

The port will be a major point connecting with the international deep-water port of Cai Mep-Thi Vai in southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province, making it easier for Vietnamese goods to be transported to European and American markets.
