New program to provide job-ready workforce to growing tourism market.
The National Tourism Development Strategy estimates that the tourism sector will require 3 million workers by 2020. Twenty-five per cent, or 750,000, will hold Bachelor degrees in tourism and hospitality, and of that number, approximately 55,000 will work at the managerial level or higher.
The information was released by Associate Professor Mathews Nkhoma,Head of Centre for RMIT Vietnam’s Centre of Commerce and Management, at the launch of the university's new Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management program.
He also told VET that Vietnam’s growing tourism and hospitality industry is generating strong demand for professionals with leadership and management skills and cultural awareness.
The RMIT University program will enable students to become part of a generation of leaders who can work effectively in both international and local organizations.
“The 24 courses of study over three years reflect international standards and a global outlook, while also staying connected to our communities through localized content and practical experience,” Associate Professor Nkhoma added.
The program, which was benchmarked across leading tourism and hospitality programs in Switzerland, the US and Australia, stands out from other degrees as students benefit from a three-month flagship industry internship in their final semester. Students will also develop the soft skills and specific career-focused attributes vital for success in this exciting industry.
RMIT University has established strong partnerships with the local and overseas tourism organizations, including InterContinental Hotels Group, Sheraton Hotel, JW Marriott Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Alma Group Vietnam, and Buffalo Tours Vietnam, to create opportunities for students after graduation.
Its Tourism and Hospitality Management graduates will be work-ready and have skills that are highly sought-after locally and globally and in diverse areas including tourism, travel and hospitality, sports and leisure, festivals and exhibitions, destination marketing, and business development.
The University will welcome its first intake at the Saigon South campus in February and at the Hanoi campus in October 2017.
