Shrimp industry urged to reach US$10 billion in export revenue by 2025

The shrimp industry must strive towards an export revenue of US$10 billion and develop a world-famous Vietnamese shrimp trademark by 2025, while associating shrimp cultivation with sustainable socio-economic development and environmental protection.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the call at a conference on the development of Vietnam’s shrimp industry, which was held in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, the locality with the largest shrimp-farming area in Vietnam, on the morning of February 6.

Vietnam has sufficient conditions and advantages to develop its shrimp industry, he said, stressing the need for a high political determination and synchronous measures in order to enhance the economic efficiency of the shrimp sector, thereby contributing to bettering farmers’ lives.

With regards to the development strategy and vision of Vietnam’s shrimp industry, PM Phuc expressed his hope that the Mekong Delta would be developed into a high-quality shrimp farming and processing hub for the world and that Vietnam would strive to become the world’s shrimp production workshop.

He insisted on the tightened control over water sources by applying scientific and technological advances to protect shrimp from diseases, while calling on Vietnamese businesses to get more involved in the procedures of providing feed and fingerlings to the shrimp industry to limit dependence on foreign companies.

Stressing the need to diversify the export markets for Vietnamese shrimp products, the PM affirmed the Government’s willingness to stand by businesses and consult with leading lawyers and legal agencies in order to protect the rights and legitimate interests of Vietnamese shrimp-farming businesses...

Addressing the conference, Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung noted that the Vietnamese shrimp industry is facing with numerous opportunities for development thanks to the increasing global demand for shrimp and the suitability of shrimp cultivation in adaptation to climate change in the Mekong Delta region...

Businesses in attendance suggested the Government take measures to reduce the prices of power used for shrimp production, reduce the lending interest rate to facilitate enterprises’ access to capital sources, and stand by businesses in building and protecting domestic shrimp trademarks.
