Starbucks sells Vietnamese coffee in US

This is the first time Arabica from Vietnam has been selected for sale by coffee giant.

Starbucks has announced that it has officially put Da Lat coffee into its sales system. This is the first time a type of Vietnamese Arabica coffee has been selected for sale by the coffee chain. The current price of a kilo of roasted coffee is $50.

Mr. Leslie Wolford, a senior coffee expert at Starbucks, said that he was very satisfied with the quality of Da Lat coffee. “It has a gentle acidity, suitable for customer tastes, whether by filter or espresso,” he said.

In the early 19th century the French brought coffee to the mountainous area of Da Lat in the central highlands province of Lam Dong, because its plateau area has a cool climate, is 1,200 meters above sea level, and has basalt soil, which are great conditions for growing coffee.

In the thousands of coffee growing regions around the world at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, only six markets - Indonesia, Kenya, Rwanda, Brazil, Colombia and Guatemala – could provide coffee that meets the flavor standards of Starbucks. Da Lat has now become the seventh such location.

As at 2014 Starbucks had more than 21,366 stores in 56 countries worldwide, of which 11,457 are in the US. In 2014 the company opened more than 1,600 new coffee shops. Starbucks' revenue in 2014 reached $16.5 billion.
